What to Do with Your Hands in Wedding Photos (Yes, Really!)

Bride and groom walking hand-in-hand outdoors, smiling at each other after their wedding ceremony.

Ah, the classic question: “What do I do with my hands?” You’re not alone — nearly every couple says this at some point during their photos. It’s completely normal to feel a bit awkward when the camera’s on you.

The good news? You don’t need to overthink it. Here’s what I usually say:

Hold each other

Whether it’s a hand resting on their arm, arms wrapped around each other, or fingers naturally intertwined — staying physically connected always looks and feels the most real. You don’t need to overthink it. You’re already used to reaching for each other without realising — so just do what feels natural.

You’re not posing for a catalogue. You’re holding your person. And in that little touch — a squeeze of the hand, a brush of the thumb — there’s so much story. It’s comfort. It’s love. It’s you two, just being yourselves.

Use movement

A little movement goes a long way — and it makes everything feel more relaxed. Whether you’re walking hand-in-hand, spinning each other around for a laugh, straightening a jacket, or brushing hair gently out of the way — these small, natural actions bring your photos to life.

Movement takes the pressure off standing still and “posing.” It gives your body something to do, and more importantly, it brings you into the moment. You’re not focused on the camera — you’re focused on each other.

I might suggest a little stroll, a slow sway, or even just a quiet moment where you forget I’m there. That’s when the magic happens. The laughs, the glances, the way you naturally lean into each other — it all comes out when you’re movingrather than trying to stay perfectly still.

Hold something if it helps

Sometimes the simplest trick is just to give them a job. Holding something — whether it’s your bouquet, a glass of fizz, your partner’s jacket, or even each other — instantly makes everything feel more relaxed.

It takes the pressure off and gives you something to focus on that isn’t the camera. You naturally start adjusting, shifting your grip, playing with the ribbon on your bouquet — and those little in-between gestures are the ones that often make the best photos.

And hey, if it’s a prosecco in one hand and your partner’s hand in the other? Even better. You don’t have to be polished to look brilliant — you just have to be comfortable.

Don’t worry

Honestly? You don’t need to stress about how you look or whether you’re “doing it right.” If something feels awkward, I’ll gently guide you — nothing stiff or staged, just little tweaks to help things feel natural.

But most of the time, it sorts itself out. When you’re wrapped up in the moment, focused on each other, not the camera — that’s when the good stuff happens.

You don’t need to perform or pose. You just need to be there, with your person, feeling all the feels. That’s what I’m capturing — not perfection, but connection. And that’s what will make your photos mean something years from now.
